Experience
The Bridge to Heaven
Amanohashidate is a sandbar three kilometres long, covered in several thousand pine trees, dividing a bay in two. It has been on the list of Japan's three great views for centuries. You can walk its length, and at the viewpoints people traditionally bend over and look at it upside down, which is how it earned its name.
Ine, and the funaya
Ine is a fishing village of around two hundred boathouses built at the waterline, boat garage below and living quarters above. The bay is unusually calm and the tidal range small, which is why they could be built this way and why nowhere else in Japan looks like it. The village is still working rather than preserved.
Why the car matters
Neither place is straightforward by public transport, which is precisely why the coach tours do not come and the crowds are absent. A private car makes it a comfortable day out of Kyoto, and your guide can adjust the timings to whatever the weather and the light are doing.
