Experience
A city that was never bombed
Kanazawa was the seat of the wealthiest domain in Japan after the shogunate itself, and it came through the war untouched. That is the single fact that explains the place: the merchant streets, the samurai walls and the teahouse districts are the originals, not reconstructions.
Omicho Market
The market has fed the city since the eighteenth century and it is still where restaurants buy. Crab, sweet shrimp, yellowtail from the Sea of Japan. Your guide walks you through what is in season and what is worth eating standing up.
Kenroku-en
The garden takes its name from the six attributes a perfect garden was said to need, which no one garden was supposed to combine. It was the private garden of the ruling family for two centuries before it opened. Your guide explains what you are looking at, which turns a pleasant walk into something considerably more interesting.
The old districts
The last stretch covers the earthen-walled lanes where the samurai lived and the teahouse quarter where the geisha still work. Both are compact, both are original, and both are best walked with someone who can tell you what went on behind the frontages.
