Overview

A Kyoto geisha dinner with two hours of private time with a geisha or maiko — dances, instruments, games and conversation — over a multi-course kaiseki meal with unlimited sake. Your guide walks you through Gion beforehand and explains what the profession actually is, so the evening is not a performance you watch blankly.

Highlights

  • Two hours of private time with a geisha or maiko
  • A multi-course kaiseki dinner with seasonal Kyoto ingredients
  • Unlimited sake, with non-alcoholic options
  • Gion Shirakawa and Hanami-koji walked beforehand
  • Photographs with your geisha host

Experience

Gion Shirakawa first

Before dinner we walk the canal at Gion Shirakawa, where willows hang over the water and the machiya back onto the stream. Your guide explains what the district is, how the teahouse system works and what the years of training behind a maiko's appearance actually involve.

Dinner, and two hours of company

The meal is kaiseki — a sequence of small seasonal courses, built around what Kyoto is eating that month. The geisha or maiko is with you for two hours: dancing, playing, running the drinking games that have been part of this for centuries, and talking. Your guide interprets throughout, so it is a conversation rather than a display.

What you take away

The setting looks formal and the evening is not. There is no script, and your interpreter keeps the conversation moving. You are welcome to take photographs with your host, and the sake does not run out.

Important Information

  • You will be seated on tatami. Wear something you can sit comfortably in, and shoes that come off easily.
  • Smart casual is right. There is no formal dress code.
  • Please arrive on time — the geisha's schedule is fixed and cannot be moved.
  • Your guide will contact you through WhatsApp before the tour, so please install it in advance.
  • We can accommodate most dietary preferences with advance notice, but strict requirements such as vegan, halal or severe allergies are difficult on this route. If you have strict requirements, book our private tour instead and we will build the evening around them.

FAQ

Is it a geisha or a maiko?

Either, depending on availability. A maiko is an apprentice and wears the more elaborate dress; a geisha is fully trained. Both spend the same two hours with you.

Do we actually talk to her, or just watch?

You talk. That is the point of the format. Your guide interprets throughout, so the conversation runs properly rather than through gestures.

What is included in the price?

The Gion walk, the kaiseki dinner, unlimited sake, two hours with your geisha host and photographs with her. Only extra food and drinks are separate.

Can I take photographs?

Yes, with your host, inside the ryotei. Photographing maiko on the street in Gion is a different matter and is not permitted.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
