Highlights
The Hakone Ropeway, over an active volcanic valley
Owakudani, where the ground still vents sulphur
Hakone Shrine and the torii gate standing in Lake Ashi
A cruise across a crater lake
Air-conditioned coach, English-speaking guide throughout
Experience
Over Owakudani by ropeway
The ropeway climbs over a valley that is still geologically active — steam rising from the hillside, the smell of sulphur, vegetation that gives up partway. On a clear day Fuji sits behind it. It is the part of the day guests photograph most.
The valley floor
Owakudani was formed by an eruption three thousand years ago and has not settled since. Your guide explains what is happening under the surface and why the area is monitored as closely as it is.
Hakone Shrine and Lake Ashi
The shrine sits in cedar forest above the lake, with its torii gate standing in the water below. The gate has become one of the most photographed objects in Japan, and there is usually a queue for it. Your guide will tell you whether it is worth joining that day.
Across the crater
The day finishes with a cruise across Lake Ashi, which fills the caldera of the volcano you have been standing on. From the water the scale of the whole thing finally makes sense.

It is colder in Hakone than in Tokyo, and windier on the water. Bring a layer.
Fuji is often hidden by cloud. The tour runs regardless.

FAQ
What is included, and what do I pay for on the day?
The coach, all road transport and your English-speaking guide are included. The ropeway ticket, the lake cruise and lunch are paid on the day if you choose to take them.
What happens if Owakudani is closed?
It closes at short notice when volcanic activity rises. If that happens your guide adjusts the route and you still see the shrine, the lake and the ropeway's lower section.
Will we see Mt Fuji?
Often, but not always. Cloud hides it on many days and no operator can promise otherwise.
How much walking is involved?
Not much. This is a coach day with short walks at each stop.
What is the cancellation policy?
