Overview
A guided walk through Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, from the Atomic Bomb Dome to the hypocentre, the Children's Peace Monument and the Flame of Peace. The park is open to anyone; what a guide adds is the human detail behind each monument, and the context that makes the place legible rather than simply solemn.
Highlights
The Atomic Bomb Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage site
The hypocentre, a short walk from the Dome
The Children's Peace Monument and the story behind it
The Flame of Peace, burning since 1964
Two hours on foot, with a guide who knows the individual histories
Experience
The Dome
The building was a commercial exhibition hall and was almost directly beneath the detonation, which is why part of it is still standing. It has been left exactly as it was. Your guide explains what the building was before, and the long argument in Hiroshima about whether to preserve it or clear it away.
The hypocentre
A short walk from the Dome, a plain plaque marks the point above which the bomb exploded. There is nothing dramatic about it and most people walk past. Standing there with the geography explained is the moment the scale of what happened tends to land.
The monuments, and the people in them
The Children's Peace Monument was built for Sadako Sasaki and the children who died of radiation illness in the years afterwards. The memorial to mobilised students remembers more than ten thousand schoolchildren. Your guide tells these as individual histories rather than as figures.
The Flame, and what the park is for
The Flame of Peace has burned since 1964 and is intended to stay lit until the last nuclear weapon is gone. The park was designed as an argument, not only as a memorial, and understanding that changes how you read every part of it.
