Overview

A private Hiroshima tour with a local guide. The Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome, the Shukkei-en garden, the downtown and Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima are the usual candidates. How much time you give each is decided with you rather than fixed in advance.

Highlights

  • The Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome
  • Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima, built out over the water
  • Shukkei-en, a garden laid out in 1620
  • Hiroshima okonomiyaki, which is not the Osaka version
  • A private guide, and a day paced the way you want it

Experience

The park, at your own pace

The Peace Memorial Park is not a place to be marched around. Your guide gives you the context — what stood here before August 1945, what the Dome was, what the memorials commemorate — and then leaves you the time you need. Some guests want an hour in the museum, some want three, and some want to sit by the river afterwards. All of those are the right answer.

A city, not only a memorial

Hiroshima is a working city of over a million people, and it can be a mistake to see only the park. Shukkei-en was laid out in 1620, destroyed with everything else and replanted; a ginkgo in it survived the blast and is still growing. The downtown, the covered arcades and the baseball are what people actually live here for.

Miyajima

The shrine at Itsukushima is built on piles over the water, so at high tide it appears to float and the great torii stands offshore. The island itself was held sacred for centuries. It is around forty minutes from the city by train and ferry, and it is worth arriving early or staying late, when the day visitors have gone.

Okonomiyaki, done the local way

Hiroshima's version is layered rather than mixed, with noodles in it, cooked on a hot plate in front of you. There are places in the city with several floors of nothing else. Your guide takes you to one where locals eat and orders in the local shorthand.

FAQ

What is included in the price, and what do I pay for on the day?

The price covers your private English-speaking guide. Entry fees, transport and meals are paid as you go, and by convention you also cover your guide's. Bring cash.

Can we cover both the Peace Park and Miyajima in one day?

Yes, but it makes for a full one. Many guests give the park the morning and the island the afternoon, and your guide will pace it around how long you want in the museum.

Is the museum suitable for children?

Parts of it are hard for adults. Your guide will tell you what to expect and can route around the most difficult sections. Tell us the ages when you book.

When can we see the torii standing in water?

At high tide. Tide times are published in advance and your guide will plan the day around them if that matters to you.

Can we do this as a day trip from Osaka or Kyoto?

Yes. Hiroshima is around ninety minutes from Osaka by shinkansen, though most guests stay a night to do the island properly.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
