Overview
A guided tour of Shinminato in Toyama Bay. The tall ship Kaiwo Maru, the Kitokito seafood market, the Shinminato Bridge and the canal-side streets, with the Japan Alps across the water. Toyama Bay produces white shrimp and firefly squid that barely leave the prefecture.
Highlights
Kaiwo Maru, a preserved four-masted training ship
Kitokito Market, for white shrimp, firefly squid and yellowtail
Shinminato Bridge, one of Japan's longest cable-stayed bridges
The Japan Alps rising straight out of the bay
A sake brewery tasting, if you want one
Experience
A bay unlike the rest of Japan's coast
Toyama Bay drops away steeply very close to shore, which is why it produces things the rest of the country does not. White shrimp, eaten raw and sweet, are effectively found nowhere else in commercial quantity. Firefly squid come into the shallows to spawn in spring and glow blue doing it. Your guide explains why the geography does this.
Kaiwo Maru
A four-masted sail training ship, preserved in the water at Shinminato and open to walk through — the wheel, the cabins, the rigging. Behind her, on a clear day, the Tateyama range stands three thousand metres above the far side of the bay. It is an unusual view of Japan.
The market
Kitokito Market sells what came off the boats that morning. Depending on the season that means shiroebi, hotaru-ika, buri yellowtail or snow crab. There are counters where it is cooked in front of you, and your guide will tell you what is worth ordering that day.
The canals and the bridge
Shinminato is cut through with canals and the old streets follow them. The Shinminato Bridge crosses the harbour mouth high enough for ships to pass beneath, with a walkway that gives you the bay, the port and the mountains in one view.

FAQ
What is included in the price, and what do I pay for on the day?
The price covers your English-speaking guide. Transport, entry fees and meals are paid as you go, and by convention you also cover your guide's. Bring cash.
Will we see the Alps?
On a clear day, yes, and it is the view the area is known for. Winter and early spring give the best odds.
Can we see the firefly squid glowing?
The glowing boats run at night in spring only, as a separate excursion. Your guide can tell you how to arrange it if you are here in season.
Is this suitable if we are on a cruise stop?
Yes. It is built as a half day near the port and can be timed to your ship.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
