Experience
The floats
Aomori's Nebuta festival, in early August, sends enormous illuminated paper floats through the streets — warriors and demons several metres high, lit from within, hauled by teams with thousands of dancers around them. WA RASSE keeps several of the actual floats from recent years indoors, so you can stand under one at any time of year and see how it is built.
The museum
The Aomori Museum of Art is a white building set partly below ground next to a Jomon archaeological site, designed so the excavation trench and the gallery echo each other. It holds a large dog sculpture by Yoshitomo Nara, who comes from the prefecture, and a set of enormous painted backdrops made by Chagall for the ballet Aleko.
Hakkoda
The mountains behind the city, reached by ropeway, with hiking in summer and some of the heaviest snow on earth in winter — the trees ice over into shapes the Japanese call snow monsters. There are hot springs on the mountain, including one large wooden bathhouse that has been in use for centuries.
The market
At Furukawa you buy a ticket sheet, get a bowl of rice, and walk the stalls exchanging tickets for whatever you want on top — scallops, tuna, sea urchin, squid. You end up with a bowl you designed. It is the most enjoyable lunch in the city and it costs very little.

FAQ
What is included in the price, and what do I pay for on the day?
The price covers your private English-speaking guide. Entry fees, transportation and meals are paid as you go, and by convention you also cover your guide's. Bring cash.
Can we see the Nebuta floats outside festival season?
Yes. WA RASSE keeps several full-size floats from recent festivals on display year-round, with the drums and music alongside.
When is the festival itself?
Early August. The city fills completely and accommodation goes months ahead.
Can we visit the Jomon site at Sannai-Maruyama?
Yes. It is a large prehistoric settlement site listed by UNESCO, next to the art museum. Say so when you book.
Can we add Hirosaki or Oirase?
Both are reachable but need most of a day. Ask when you book and we will tell you what fits.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
