Tonkotsu ramen, and the yatai street stalls at night
Experience
Closer to Seoul than to Tokyo
Fukuoka faces the Asian mainland and has done business with it for well over a thousand years, which is why it feels less inward-looking than most Japanese cities. It is also compact — airport to city centre in a few minutes — and it is consistently rated by residents as one of the easiest places in Japan to live.
The castle, the park and the tower
Fukuoka Castle is a ruin, but a large one, and the stonework and gates are spread across a hill above the city. Ohori Park next to it is built around a lake that was part of the castle's water defences, with a path right around it. The tower on the bay gives you the shape of the whole thing from above.
Dazaifu
A short train ride out of the city, Dazaifu Tenmangu is dedicated to a ninth-century scholar and official who died in exile here and was afterwards enshrined as the deity of learning. Students come before examinations in enormous numbers. The approach is lined with shops selling grilled mochi that has been made here for centuries.
Ramen, and the stalls
Tonkotsu ramen — the cloudy pork bone broth now sold worldwide — comes from this part of Kyushu, and Hakata is where it is done properly. At night, yatai stalls open along the river and the streets of Tenjin, seating a handful of people each. Fukuoka has more of them than anywhere else in Japan, and your guide knows which are worth the queue.

FAQ
What is included in the price, and what do I pay for on the day?
The price covers your private English-speaking guide. Entry fees, transport and meals are paid as you go, and by convention you also cover your guide's. Bring cash.
Can we do Dazaifu and the city in one day?
Yes, though it is a full one. Most guests take the city in the morning and Dazaifu in the afternoon.
Can we eat at the yatai stalls?
Yes, if your tour runs into the evening. They are small, cash-only and worth the wait. Tell us when you book.
Can we add Nagasaki, Beppu or Yufuin?
All are reachable from Fukuoka but each needs its own day. Ask when you book and we will tell you what works.
Is Fukuoka worth more than a stopover?
For food, for the ease of getting around and as a base for the rest of Kyushu, yes. Two nights is a reasonable minimum.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
