Overview

Two hours in Kyoto's geisha district: the first walking Gion's stone lanes with a guide who explains how the world behind those doors works, the second sitting with a real maiko for a live performance and an open question session. No dinner, no formality — just the walk and the meeting.

Highlights

  • One hour walking Gion, one hour with a maiko
  • A live performance of one or two songs
  • An open question session — ask her anything
  • A photo session with your maiko host
  • Two hours, without a full dinner commitment

Experience

Gion, explained rather than photographed

The first hour is on foot through the stone lanes, past the wooden machiya and the teahouses with no signage. Your guide explains the ochaya system, how a girl becomes a maiko, how long the training takes and what happens when it ends. Almost none of this is visible from the street.

Face to face with a maiko

The second hour is spent in a small room with an apprentice geisha. She performs one or two songs — dance, with live accompaniment — and then sits down and takes questions. Your guide interprets, so the conversation runs properly rather than through gestures.

What people ask

Little is off limits: how heavy the kimono is, how she sleeps with that hairstyle, what her family thought, whether she has a phone. She answers all of it. That hour is why this exists.
