Overview

A tea ceremony in Kyoto held in a small room rather than a hall. A teacher takes you through what each movement is for, serves matcha with traditional sweets, and then hands you the whisk so you can make your own. No experience is assumed and nothing is performed at you.

Highlights

  • A small tea room, not a hall or a hotel function space
  • Matcha and wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets
  • Make your own bowl, with guidance
  • Every movement explained as it happens
  • English throughout, no experience needed

Experience

A room built for a few people

Tea ceremony is often staged for large groups, which changes it entirely. This room is small, as it was designed to be. You can see the teacher's hands, hear the water and ask questions as they occur to you rather than saving them for the end.

What the movements are for

Every gesture has a reason, and without knowing them the ceremony looks like an unusually slow way to make a drink. The bowl is turned for a reason, the cloth folded a particular way for a reason. Your teacher explains each one as it happens.

Making your own

Then you are given the whisk. Whisking is harder than it looks. Getting the froth right is the part that takes practice. Wagashi is served alongside, chosen for the season. There is no test and nothing to get wrong.
