Hida beef, and the sake breweries on the same street
Experience
Why the mountains kept it
Takayama sits high in the Hida range and was hard to reach for most of its history. It was placed under direct shogunal control because of its timber, and its carpenters were good enough to be summoned to build in the capital. The isolation is why the merchant quarter is still standing and why the town feels unlike anywhere on the plains.
Sanmachi Suji
Three narrow streets of dark timber merchant houses, most of them still trading — sake breweries, miso makers, craft shops. The breweries hang a cedar ball outside when the new season's sake is ready, and several pour tastings. Your guide will tell you which ones.
Takayama Jinya
This was the local government office under direct shogunal administration, and it is the only building of its kind still standing. The rooms, the rice storehouse and the interrogation room are all intact, which makes the machinery of Edo-period government unusually easy to explain.
Hida Folk Village
An open-air site of farmhouses moved here from villages across the region, including the steep thatched gassho-zukuri roofs built to shed heavy snow. It sits above the town with the Alps behind it, and it is the closest you can get to Shirakawa-go without the trip out.

FAQ
What is included in the price, and what do I pay for on the day?
The price covers your private English-speaking guide. Entry fees, transport and meals are paid as you go, and by convention you also cover your guide's. Bring cash.
Can we add Shirakawa-go?
Yes. It is around fifty minutes by bus from Takayama and needs half a day. Tell us when you book.
How do we get to Takayama?
By limited express from Nagoya, or by bus from Tokyo, Kyoto or Kanazawa. Most guests stay at least one night.
When are the Takayama festivals?
Spring and autumn. The town fills completely on those dates, so book accommodation and this tour well ahead.
Is Hida beef worth the price?
It is the local speciality and the reason many guests come. Your guide will point you to the places that serve it properly rather than the ones selling skewers to the street.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
