Overview
A private day trip from Tokyo to Shimoda, on the Izu Peninsula. This is where Perry's ships arrived and where the treaty that opened Japan was signed, and the temple it was signed in is still standing. White-sand beaches and a lighthouse on the cape are a short drive away.
Highlights
Ryosen-ji, where the Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed
Perry Road, a canal lined with old timber and stone buildings
Shirahama, white sand and clear water on the Pacific coast
Cape Tsumekizaki and its lighthouse
Private transport and hotel pick-up if you want it
Experience
Where the country reopened
For over two hundred years Japan was effectively closed. In 1854 an American squadron forced the issue, and Shimoda was one of the first two ports opened. The agreement that followed was signed at Ryosen-ji, a temple you can still walk into. Almost nobody from Tokyo comes down to see it.
Perry Road
A short canal lined with old timber and stone buildings runs through the town, named after the commodore whose arrival changed everything. It takes twenty minutes to walk and it is the most photogenic part of Shimoda, particularly in the late afternoon.
The coast
Izu's Pacific beaches are not what people expect from Japan — white sand, clear water and, outside August, hardly anyone on them. Shirahama is the best known. Cape Tsumekizaki, further round, has a lighthouse and an open view of the ocean with nothing between you and it.
Why a private day works here
Shimoda is around three hours from Tokyo and the sights are spread along the coast rather than clustered in a town. Having a guide and a vehicle for the day is the difference between seeing three places properly and spending the afternoon at a bus stop.
