Highlights

  • Kumamoto Castle, and the stone walls it is famous for
  • Sakuranobaba Josaien, with samurai armour to try on
  • Suizenji Jojuen, an Edo garden with a miniature Mount Fuji
  • Basashi, karashi renkon and Kumamoto ramen
  • A private guide, and a route decided with you

Experience

The walls

Kumamoto Castle was built by a commander who had spent his career besieging other people's castles, and it shows. The stone bases curve outward as they rise so that an attacker gets steeper wall the higher they climb. It was never taken by assault. The 2016 earthquake did severe damage and the repair work is a decades-long project you can watch in progress.

Below the castle

Sakuranobaba Josaien is a modern complex built in the style of a castle town at the foot of the walls, with food stalls, craft shops and exhibits. Armour can be tried on. It is unashamedly for visitors, and it is also where the local specialities are easiest to find in one place.

What Kumamoto eats

Basashi, raw horse, is the local delicacy and is taken seriously here — sliced thin, served with ginger and soy. Karashi renkon is lotus root packed with mustard miso, battered and fried, invented as a tonic for a sickly lord. The ramen is tonkotsu with burnt garlic oil. Your guide will explain and, if you would rather not, will find you something else.

Suizenji

A garden laid out in the seventeenth century by the ruling family, built as a miniature landscape of the old highway between Kyoto and Edo, with a small conical hill standing in for Mount Fuji. There is a spring-fed pond, a teahouse and enough shade to sit in.

FAQ

What is included in the price, and what do I pay for on the day?

The price covers your private English-speaking guide. Entry fees, transportation, and meals are paid as you go, and by convention you also cover your guide's. Bring cash.

Is the castle open after the earthquake?

The main keep has reopened and much of the grounds can be walked, but restoration continues and some areas are closed. Your guide will confirm what is accessible.

Do we have to eat horse?

No. It is the local speciality and guests are often curious, but there is plenty else. Your guide will order around you.

Can we do this from Fukuoka?

Yes. Kumamoto is around forty minutes from Hakata by shinkansen.

Can we add Mount Aso?

Aso is a volcanic caldera a couple of hours away and needs its own day, with access depending on volcanic activity. Ask when you book.
