Overview
A guided tour of Sasebo in Nagasaki. The harbour and its naval vessels, the covered shopping arcade, the Kujukushima islands by boat and the Tenkaiho lookout. Sasebo has had an American base since 1945, and the resulting mix is unlike anywhere else in Japan.
Highlights
Kujukushima, and a short cruise through the islands
The Yonkacho arcade, one of the longest covered streets in Japan
The Sasebo Burger, invented here from American recipes
Tenkaiho, and the view over the island-scattered sea
The harbour, and the naval ships in it
Experience
Two navies in one harbour
Sasebo was chosen as a naval base in the 1880s because of the shape of its harbour, and it has been one ever since — Japanese, then American, and now both. That history is why the town has the food, the music and the mix it does, and your guide can explain what is where without any of it being awkward.
The burger
The Sasebo Burger came from American recipes passed to local cooks after the war and then made in Japanese kitchens for seventy years. Every shop makes its own, to order, and they are large. It sounds like a novelty and it is not; it is a genuine local speciality with a proper lineage, and your guide has a preferred shop.
The islands
Kujukushima means ninety-nine islands, which undercounts by about a hundred. They are small, forested and almost all uninhabited, scattered across the sea north of the town. A short cruise takes you through them, and it is the single best thing here.
Tenkaiho
A lookout above the coast with the whole archipelago in front of you, best at the end of the afternoon when the light is low across the water. Weather decides how much you see, and your guide will be honest about the odds before you drive up.

FAQ
What is included in the price, and what do I pay for on the day?
The price covers your English-speaking guide. Entry fees, the boat, transportation and meals are paid as you go, and by convention you also cover your guide's. Bring cash.
Does this work as a cruise excursion?
Yes. It is built around the port and can be timed to your ship.
Can we add Nagasaki city or Huis Ten Bosch?
Nagasaki is around ninety minutes away and needs its own day. Huis Ten Bosch is close by and can be added if you want it. Ask when you book.
How many islands are there really?
Over two hundred, despite the name. Ninety-nine was an old way of saying too many to count.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
