Okinawa was the Ryukyu Kingdom, an independent state trading with China, Korea and Southeast Asia, and it was only absorbed into Japan in 1879. The language, the music, the food and the architecture all show it. Your guide will point out what is Ryukyuan rather than Japanese as the day goes on, and once you see it you cannot stop seeing it.
The road north from Naha runs along the coast. Chatan and the American Village are the legacy of the postwar occupation — a seafront of shops, bars and a ferris wheel with a distinctly non-Japanese feel. Further on, Onna village is where the water turns the colour it is famous for, and Cape Manzamo is a limestone headland shaped by the sea into an elephant's trunk.
One of the largest aquarium tanks in the world, holding whale sharks and manta rays, viewed through an acrylic wall eight metres high. People sit in front of it for an hour without moving. The rest of the aquarium covers the coral of the Okinawan reefs, which is the point of building it here.
Okinawa is longer than it looks and the aquarium is at the far end. That is why this is a full day with a car — done by bus it is most of the day spent travelling. With a driver-guide it is a comfortable run up the coast with stops where you want them.
