Overview

An Osaka food tour from Dotonbori into Uranamba, the lanes where the city eats when it is not performing for anyone. Thirteen dishes across a street stall, an izakaya and a standing bar, with two drinks included and a guide who orders. Takoyaki is where it starts.

Highlights

  • Thirteen dishes across a stall, an izakaya and a standing bar
  • Two drinks included, sake among the options
  • Takoyaki from a stall Osaka queues at
  • Uranamba, the backstreets rather than the neon
  • A temple stop, to explain the city before the eating starts

Experience

Dotonbori, briefly

We start under the neon because it should be seen, and because the story of how Dotonbori became what it is says something about Osaka's relationship with food. Then we leave it. The eating happens elsewhere.

A temple, before anything else

A short stop at a local temple gives your guide the chance to explain how Osaka differs from Kyoto and Tokyo — a merchant city, less formal, more direct. It takes ten minutes and it changes how the rest of the evening reads.

Takoyaki, then two more rooms

Takoyaki is Osaka's own, and the difference between a good stall and a tourist one is considerable. From there it is an izakaya and a tachinomiya — a standing bar, where you eat on your feet among people who came straight from work. Thirteen dishes in total, and two drinks.

FAQ

What is included in the price?

Thirteen dishes across three venues, two drinks and your English-speaking guide. Anything extra you order is your own.

How does this differ from the Osaka bar crawl?

This is food-led with drinks included; the bar crawl is drink-led with food paid as you go. If you want dinner, book this one.

Can I join if I don't drink alcohol?

Yes, and the price is the same. Both included drinks can be non-alcoholic.

What is a tachinomiya?

A standing bar. No seats, cheap plates, quick turnover. It is one of the most ordinary and most enjoyable ways to drink in Osaka.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
