Overview

An Osaka tour that starts at the castle and ends in Dotonbori, taking the subway between them like everyone else does. Hokoku Shrine, the castle grounds and main tower, Tennoji Park and the downtown districts, with the main tower admission included and photographs taken as you go.

Highlights

  • Osaka Castle grounds and main tower, admission included
  • Hokoku Shrine, at the foot of the castle
  • A subway ride between districts, the way Osaka moves
  • Tennoji Park and the southern downtown
  • Photographs taken for you throughout

Experience

The castle, as a piece of military design

Osaka Castle is usually photographed and rarely explained. The walls, the moats and the approach were laid out to make an assault expensive, and once your guide points out how, the whole site reads differently. Hokoku Shrine at its foot is dedicated to the man who built it.

Inside the main tower

The tower is a reconstruction, and your guide will say so, but the exhibits inside cover the sieges that ended the Warring States period and the family that lost them. Admission is included. The view from the top gives you the shape of the city.

South, by subway

Instead of a coach, you take the subway to the southern districts, which is how Osaka actually gets around. Tennoji Park and Tenshiba have been rebuilt in the last decade into somewhere people spend afternoons, and the contrast with the castle is the point of the day.

Into the downtown

The last stretch is the neon and the food streets. By this point your guide has given you enough of the city's history that Dotonbori looks like the logical conclusion of it rather than a separate attraction.

FAQ

What is included in the price?

Your English-speaking guide, admission to the castle main tower and photographs taken during the tour. Subway fares and meals are your own.

Is the castle worth going inside?

The building is a 1930s reconstruction, which disappoints some people. The exhibits and the view are good, and your guide will tell you honestly what to expect before you go up.

How much walking is involved?

A few kilometres, mostly flat, with a subway ride breaking it up.

Does this cover the same ground as the food tours?

It finishes in Dotonbori but does not include eating. If food is what you are after, book the food tour or the bar crawl instead.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
