Overview

A walking tour of the Imperial Palace grounds and what remains of Edo Castle — the stone walls, the moats and the gates that once defended the shogun. Your guide explains what stood where, and takes the photographs for you as you go, which is harder to arrange than it sounds.

Highlights

  • Edo Castle's stone walls, moats and gates, explained
  • The East Garden, inside the palace grounds
  • Samurai-era history told as a story, not a list of dates
  • Your guide takes the photographs so you are actually in them
  • English throughout, no Japanese needed

Experience

What is actually left of Edo Castle

The castle keep burned down in the seventeenth century and was never rebuilt, which is why most visitors assume there is nothing to see. There is a great deal. The stone walls, the moats and the gates are all original in position, and once your guide has shown you the scale of it, the modern city around it looks different.

Inside the East Garden

The East Garden sits within the palace grounds and is open to the public. We walk it together, past the foundations of the keep and the guardhouses, while your guide explains how the shogunate actually ran from here — who lived where, and what happened when the system collapsed.

Photographs you are in

While the central keep is gone, the impressive moats, gates, and stone fortress walls remain. Your guide doubles as your personal photographer throughout the tour—capturing moments at every landmark so you return home with incredible photos you would not have taken alone.
