Overview

An hour with a working geisha in Kagurazaka, Tokyo's quietest surviving geisha district. She performs a classical dance, teaches you the parlour games played in these rooms for generations, and then sits down over matcha to answer whatever you want to ask.

Highlights

  • A working geisha, not a performer hired for tourists
  • Classical dance, performed at close range
  • The ozashiki parlour games, taught and played with you
  • Matcha and a seasonal sweet, and an open conversation
  • Never more than fifteen guests, and usually far fewer

Experience

Kagurazaka, and why it is different

Tokyo has a handful of surviving geisha districts and almost nobody visits them. Kagurazaka grew as one in the nineteenth century around the Bishamonten temple, and it is still a grid of stone-paved alleys behind the main slope. A small number of women continue to work here. Meeting one is not something you can arrange by walking in.

The performance

She dances traditional Japanese dance, Nihon Buyou. The room is small, so you are watching from a few metres rather than from a theatre seat — close enough to hear the fabric of the kimono move, which is part of it. Your guide explains what the piece is and what the movements are describing before it begins.

The games

Then she teaches you the ozashiki games. These were how guests were entertained in these rooms long before anyone thought of them as culture: quick, competitive, played to the rhythm of the shamisen, and almost always lost by the visitor. This is the part where the room stops being formal.

Matcha, and the questions

Finally the tea is served — matcha, with a sweet chosen for the season — and she takes questions through your interpreter. How long the training takes, what the hair and the kimono involve, why she chose it, what the work is actually like. She answers plainly. Guests consistently say this is the part they did not expect and would not give up.

FAQ

What is included in the price?

The hour with the geisha, the performance, the games, matcha with a seasonal sweet, photographs, and an English-speaking guide interpreting throughout.

Is she a real geisha?

Yes. She works in the Kagurazaka district. This is not an actor or a costumed performer.

What is the difference from the geisha dinner in Kyoto?

That is a full kaiseki evening in Gion. This is one hour in Tokyo, with no meal, built around the performance, the games and the conversation.

Can we take photographs?

At the end, yes, and photographs with her are included.

How many people will be there?

Fifteen at the very most, and usually well under that.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
