Overview
A three-hour Shibuya bar crawl through places most visitors walk straight past — an izakaya above the crossing, a bar on the Miyashita Park rooftop, and a counter in the lanes behind Center-gai. Your guide orders, translates and explains, so the evening goes on talking to people rather than working out a menu.
Highlights
Three bars in one evening — Scramble Square, Miyashita Park and Center-gai
An izakaya above the world's busiest crossing
Backstreet counters that rarely see a foreign visitor
A guide who orders for the table and translates as you go
English throughout, no Japanese needed
Experience
Above the world's busiest crossing
We start at Shibuya Scramble Square, looking down on the crossing where as many as three thousand people move at once. Then we step into an izakaya of the kind Tokyo drinks in after work — small tables, a loud room, food that arrives in no particular order. Your guide orders for the table and explains what turns up.
A bar on the Miyashita Park rooftop
Miyashita Park sits above the shops, a strip of green in the middle of Shibuya. The bars along it draw a younger, local crowd and almost no visitors. This tends to be the part of the evening where guests stop taking photographs and start talking.
The lanes behind Center-gai
Center-gai is the Shibuya you have seen in films. We leave it almost immediately for the lanes behind, where the bars hold a dozen people and the owner does the pouring. This is the last stop, and you are welcome to stay on after the tour ends.
