Overview
A tea ceremony in Tokyo held in a small tea room rather than a hall, led by a teacher with more than twenty years of practice. You are shown what each movement is for, given the chance to whisk your own bowl, and told why a ceremony that looks like etiquette is really about attention.
Highlights
A small tea room, not a hall or a hotel function space
A teacher with over twenty years of practice
Whisk your own bowl, with guidance
An explanation of why each movement exists
English throughout, no experience needed
Experience
A room built for a few people
Tea ceremony is often staged for groups of thirty. This is not that. The room is small, which is how it was designed to be, and the scale changes everything — you can see the teacher's hands, hear the water, and ask questions as they occur to you.
What the movements are for
Every gesture has a reason, and without knowing them a ceremony looks like an unusually slow way to make a drink. Your teacher explains each one as it happens: why the bowl is turned, why the cloth is folded that way, why the room is entered as it is.
Making your own
You are given the chance to whisk a bowl yourself, with guidance. Whisking is harder than it looks. The froth is the part that takes practice. There is no test and nothing to get wrong.

FAQ
Do I need to kneel the whole time?
No. Formal kneeling is offered but not expected, and most guests sit cross-legged or use a low stool. Tell the teacher what is comfortable.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes, for children old enough to sit quietly for the length of the ceremony. The teacher adapts the explanation.
What is included in the price?
The ceremony itself, the matcha and the English-speaking instruction. Nothing further is required.
Will I be able to make matcha at home afterwards?
You will know how it is done and what good practice looks like. The teacher is happy to say what equipment is worth buying and what is not.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
