Overview

Zen meditation in Tokyo, at a private Asakusa temple that has stood for more than four hundred years and does not take visitors. A monk teaches the posture and the breathing, sits with you, then talks — through your English-speaking guide — about what the practice is actually for. Matcha is served afterwards.

Highlights

  • A temple over four hundred years old, closed to the public
  • Zazen taught and led by a monk, not a demonstration
  • Time to ask the monk whatever you like, with English interpretation
  • Matcha served after the sitting
  • Photographs with the monk inside the temple

Experience

A temple that does not open its doors

The temple sits in a quiet part of Asakusa and has been there for more than four hundred years. It does not take visitors. We are able to bring small groups because of a long relationship with the monk who looks after it.

Zazen, taught properly

The monk explains the posture, the breathing and where to rest your eyes, then sits with you. Nothing is rushed and nothing is performed for an audience. The first few minutes are the hardest. After that the room settles.

Tea, and time to ask

Afterwards matcha is served and the monk talks — through your guide — about what the practice is for and how it fits into an ordinary life. Guests ask whatever they like. You are welcome to take photographs inside the temple.

FAQ

Do I need any experience of meditation?

No. Most guests have never sat zazen before. The monk teaches the posture and breathing from the beginning and there is nothing to prepare.

How long do we actually sit for?

The sitting itself is shorter than most people expect. The session as a whole includes the monk's explanation, the sitting, tea and time for questions.

Is the monk speaking English?

The monk speaks in Japanese and your guide interprets. Nothing is lost — the guide is there for the whole session, including the questions afterwards.

Can I take photographs?

Yes, after the sitting. You are welcome to take photographs inside the temple and with the monk.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Bookings are confirmed instantly.
