The temple at the edge of the market was rebuilt in the 1930s in an Indian style, and it still surprises people who arrive expecting timber and tiled roofs. We start here, with your guide explaining why it looks the way it does and what that says about the period it was built in.
The inner market moved to Toyosu, but the outer market stayed, and it is still where a good part of Tokyo's kitchens shop. The lanes are narrow and the stalls are small — knife makers, dried fish, tamagoyaki, sea urchin sold by the tray. Your guide picks the ones worth stopping at.
Most of the good food here is eaten on your feet, at a counter or beside the stall it came from. Your guide orders, explains what has arrived and tells you how it is meant to be eaten. It is not a sit-down meal, and that is the point.
