The immigration and customs steps are still separate counters in the arrivals hall. You show the same code at each. If you change your flight or accommodation details after registering, take a fresh screenshot of the code.

The Customs Declaration Form, Digitally

Japan’s paper customs form is the Declaration of Accompanied Articles and Unaccompanied Articles, and Visit Japan Web asks exactly the same questions. At seven airports — New Chitose, Narita, Haneda, Chubu Centrair, Kansai, Fukuoka and Naha — you scan your passport and QR code at an electronic declaration terminal, then walk through a customs e-Gate that uses facial recognition. You need an IC passport, the kind with a chip, which most US, UK, European and Australian passports have.

Each traveler completes the terminal step individually, including family members. That said, children under 100cm tall may pass through the gate with a parent.
